The « Développement économique » commission, headed by Guy Dupont, has analysed the issues at stake in this industry and studied different evolution scenarii. A starting satement: The Reunion Island-based people massively utilise new technologies (70 % of households are equipped with at least a computer and over 50 % are connected to the Internet). The report stipulates that ICT constitute the first economic sector on the island today with 6,000 emploees, 450 operating companies and a turnover of €1.5 billion. This report underlines the technical limitations of the current solutions such as the SAFE, and the increasing needs that need to be met. The solutions recommended include the construction of a submarine cable that would go down to South Africa. It would connect Reunion Island to one of the two cables that enable West Africa to connect itself to the Internet. According to the CESER, the ICT indutry could represent 12,000 jobs in 2020.
