
Adopting and implementing a household and assimilated waste management plan (Plan Départemental des Déchets Ménagers et Assimilés) is an urgent issue in Reunion Island. In order to define the solutions to be adopted within the framework of this Plan, a public investigation has been launched and will be conducted from 8 November to 8 December 2010. This investigation is aimed at informing the population about the plan and to collect their opinions. In 2015, the tolerance that currently allows collectivities to bury mud coming from wastewater treatment plants (STEP), together with ultimate waste. In October 2010, the French government invited the services of the concerned industries and operators to develop solutions to be adopted within the 4 upcoming years to reprocess residual muds. The problem is likely to be all the more difficult as the new STEPs will generate mud additionally to the current 1,500 tonnes of mud per year: 15,000 tonnes of mud in four years ! However, the new wastewater treatment plants must opened by collectivities to catch up on their delay and tackle problems due to population growth.
Crucial product of a society more respectfull of its environment that it is willing to transmit to future generations, solar photovoltaic panels present the inconvenient of being non-recyclable products. In Reunion Island, the HALLAU company collects and transports end-of-life photovoltaic products, like the first plants installed at the beginning of the 90s, to one of the two recycling facilities in Europe. A company located in Germany provides reuse and recycling services: 85 % of defective solar panels are recycled.
Sanitary control lab Micro Lab, whose implantation in Reunion Island was facilitated by Invest in Reunion Island, has obtained new accreditations from COFRAC enabling it to perform microbiological analyses of drinking and bathing water. Specialised in professional hygiene services, Innu-Science estalishes itself in Reunion Island through the Origine company that will distribute Canadian bio-tech eco-friendly products on the island.
